parts and functions of basal ganglia




caudate nucleus            receives from cerebral cortex, sends to frontal lobe; regulates threshold potential (inhibition); linked to ideology in OCD/ Tourettes

putamen            selection of and learned movement; category, implicit and reinforcement learning; linked to “hate circuit”; ADD; movement in OCD/ Tourettes

globus pallidus            receives from caudate/putamen, send to thalamus/
subthalamic nucleus; inhibitory signals/postural control; decreased output linked to hemiballismus

subthalamic nucleus            action selection; BG pacemaker; linked to hemiballismus

substantia nigra            controls voluntary movement; produces dopamine; regulates mood; linked to Parkinsons Disease and Schizophrenia
